Short cuts

I like short cuts. That is why I have always loved Eleanor Burns system of Quilt in a Day. So when I saw this method of doing half square triangles I had to give it a try.

Ok, so these are 10" squares. Right sides together.

Sewn all the way around.

Draw a line from point to point.
In both directions.

Cut on the line in both directions.

And there you have it. Four HST already sewn together.

Which I made into a pinwheel.

This makes a 13" square.

Yay for short cuts!

  1. Thank you for posting this here on your blog. I want to try making something quilt-like but I feel I have obstacles like lack of talent for choosing/combining fabrics, simple math and sewing straight! I still want to try though and I like this shortcut and the look of your block too.

  3. Love this shortcut! I'm making a quilt using this technique. Google "Top of the Stairs" disappearing pinwheels. I'm loving how it's coming together

  4. We are thinking alike as I just tried this method...saw The Inquiring Quilter's video on it and I thought it worked great. Pinwheels are a great little block.

  5. Just a reminder - with this shortcut the outside edges of the piece are on the bias - which will stretch . It will be more of a problem the larger the block.
