Patchwork Postage

Have you ever had a quilt that you always wanted to make? One that just keeps rumbling around in your head? For years I have wanted to make a Postage Stamp quilt. The first glimmer of inspiration came from this book -

I bought this book new back in 1983, when my sweet mother in love showed me how to make yo-yo's. But the quilt that really caught my eye was this one -

I was always fascinated with this Postage Stamp Quilt. It measures 83 1/2" square, using all kinds of 1 1/2" squares. I was hesitant to make a quilt using 3216 squares! And that was just the scrappy fabrics, not including the accent colors.

So when Heidi from Handmade by Heidi suggested having a Postage Stamp quilt along, I thought here is my chance. I am so looking forward to using up a lot of my scrap pieces that I have collected over the years.

This should be fun! Come along and see what's happening as we start cutting 1 1/2" strips. I hope it will be faster then the Pony Express :-)

Or you could cheat and use honeybuns! LOL. Your quilt should be a work of art when finished.

Hmm, don't you like vintage fabrics? This give-away made me think of you: http://dontcallmebecky.typepad.com/rebekah/2010/02/vintage-sheet-fat-quarter-giveaway.html

THanks for bringing up the quilt-along - I might actually join in - it'll help with my destashing plans ;)

Cheers,
Christine

I too have always wanted to do a postage stamp quilt. Love the one you showed on your blog. I have also joined the postage stamp quilt along and hope to use up a lot of my left-over vintage fabrics from my business. Will look forward to seeing what you and others will do.

I love the look of postage stamp quilts. I started one by hand, only make them 2 x 2 blocks. It will take me a long long time to complete, but no one is waiting! Enjoy - Hugs

There is a flickr group and one of the ladies figured out how many honey buns for each size quilt you need.

I have been eyeing that quilt along but I am pretty sure that I don't have enough scraps of things I like well enough to make one yet. Once I have a larger collection, I will have to try. It does sound daunting though! I think that the strips are the way to go. I will have to enjoy seeing yours put together for now!

I always wanted to make one too, and even started - by hand, before I had a sewing machine! But I got too bored, and then discovered applique, and a whole new love came into my life. I wish you great success with this one!

You have a lot of work cut out making that quilt. When it is all said and done, t will be worth it. It should make a beautiful quilt.

The second quilt I ever made was a postage stamp quilt. I don't know the measurements, but it is square. It was made around 1991 or 1992. It resides on the back of my loveseat in my living room. Have fun making yours! Have a great weekend!
