You would be proud

of me!!!

Can you see what is happening here?

YES!!!  I am knitting a pattern!!  Woo-hoo!!!!!

I've been looking online and checking out knitting videos from the library.  The first DVD was really the best for teaching the basics.

This was where I learned how to make the dish cloths.  Tracie Wunderlich does a fabulous job of going through each process slowly and understandably.  What I like about the DVD's is that I can stop them and re-watch anything I did not understand.

The second DVD really has helped me to learn about the different stitches and what some of the symbols mean.

There are some projects too, but I've used it mainly to understand a lot of terms that completely had me confused.

So I found this pattern at the Knitting Geek.  It's called The Simplest Shawl in Stockinette Stitch.  I really want to learn how to make shawls. I pulled out some left over yarn, and started working the pattern.  It was going pretty well, until I realized that I was not making the pattern on the Purl side.  I ripped it all out and started again.  This time when I did a yarn over I did another loop over the needle as when doing the Purl stitch the yarn needs to be in the front.  So far it's working.  Whether I am doing it right or not, I'm not sure, but for my sample pieces I'm happy that the pattern is working.

Little steps :-)

Have a great weekend!

Once you can knit and purl, you can knit anything...honestly! A shawl is just a half of a dishcloth...only bigger. It will be beautiful!

Congrats on learning something new! I taught myself to knit from a book over 40 years ago. You will never regret it.

This is looking good. Knowing how to do a knit and a purl stitch means you will pretty much be able to tackle any pattern in the future.

YES, you have a WHOOP WHOOP from this direction!! I'll warn you... it is addictive. I bought "I Taught Myself to Knit" at Wal-Mart four years ago (though I had been taught to knit and purl as a child... fifty years later, I was starting over). Shawls are my most favorite thing in the world to knit! Hope you enjoy them as much. Happy knitting ~ tanna

I second the comment from PattiO. You will really love Ravelry. You need to start by creating your "membership" - just a user name and password. Completely free. This is the most amazing community website for knitters, crocheters and spinners. I just wish we quilters had something similar. The more you explore the more you will find to use. Start with all the free patterns - hundreds and hundreds of them - and so many just perfect for a beginner.

My user name is "hardenbrookgirl". You can check out anyone's projects, etc. as long as you know their user name.
