Love on a Whim

Love on a Whim by Suzanne Woods Fisher is a delightful story in the Cape Cod Creamery series.

Brynn Haywood makes a impulsive decision to marry a man she has only know for 24 hours. She panics and heads to Cape Cod to figure out what she has done. Her best friend Dawn Dixon, feeling she knows what is best for her friend, is determined to help her out of the mess she has made for herself. All while making preparations for the wedding of Dawn's mother Marnie's boyfriends daughter. The plans are gruesome, with the mother of the bride making constant changes. And Lincoln's son, Bear, shows up, angry and hostile towards Dawn's family.

This is the third in the Cape Cod Creamery series, but can be read as a single story. It centers on family, forgiveness and self-discovery. The story is well written and the characters are interesting and well developed. This is clean, enjoyable and faith based. If you haven't read any of Miss Fisher's other books, you definitely should.

Memorial Day

"I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day.
I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it. We honor them in a joyous, thankful, triumphant commemoration of what they did. "
~Benjamin Harrison

In memory and honor of those who have fought and died to keep our country free.

Off the Cuff

Several years ago I bought this book.

There are several really cute pincushion patterns and lots of creative ideas.

But truthfully, this is the one that caught my attention.

I had this idea if you use men's shirts for making quilt blocks, wouldn't it be cool to cut off the cuffs and make pincushions??

So, I bought a mans shirt for $1.00 from the thrift store and gave it a try.

Isn't he cute?? I did not follow the exact directions given in the book, but just did my own thing. And I still think he turned out cute :-) The ears are flower buttons.

How about you? Do you ever go out of your comfort zone? Let's be creative today and make something outside of the box!

Perfect match

Remember when I shared a shortcut to making half square triangles?  Well I pieced them all together and found some matching fabric for a nice border.

The green fabric matched perfectly with the leaves on the fabric.

That is another charity quilt for the nursing home project for Christmas. Yay!

A wonderful day

Did you have a good Mother's Day? Mine was great. My daughter took me to get a pedicure on Saturday. I normally don't get them, but it was such a nice treat. Then she went to church with us, which made this mama's heart happy.

Happy Flowers from daughter

then my son came by and brought these
and a dozen long stem red roses from sweet hubby.
My youngest son's family sent this amazing picture they painted of Grandma's Garden.
Isn't it adorable? Their mama is so talented and creative.

And to top it all off, I received a fun package from the Fat Quarter Shop!

Whether you are a mom or not, I hope you had a wonderful day

A Mother's Day memory

My presence shall go with you,
and I will give you rest.

Exodus 33:14

The call came early. She was experiencing pain and was having difficulty breathing. My husband and I rushed to her apartment, where we found her lying on her bed. She told me she had eaten a banana that morning, and wondered if it was indigestion. It did not sound like it to me. We gathered her up and rushed to the Emergency Room.

After spending a couple of hours in the waiting room, a doctor came out and gave us the news. She had had a heart attack and was being transferred to the cardiac ward. After several long hours of waiting, a cardiologist came to talk with me. He was sober but not disheartened. He told me that if you had to have a heart attack, she had had it in the best area of the heart. So apparently there was minimal damage. They would keep her and do more tests. That was Tuesday.

On Wednesday I went back to the hospital, but because she was in the cardiac ward, visitors were not allowed to stay in her room. Only intermittent visits every five or six hours. Her sisters came and of course they wanted to see her. So I gave up one of  my visitations for them. Then my cousin wanted to see her, and again I allowed her my place. I finally was able to visit with her that evening. Fifteen short minutes was all that was allowed. So I spent most of Wednesday in the waiting room. I told her I would be back for the ten o'clock visitation the next day.

Thursday morning I brewed coffee and filled a thermos. Newspaper and magazines in hand, I settled in for a long morning, waiting for the ten o'clock visitation.

Other people wandered into the small windowless room. At 9:45 a nurse came into the waiting room and asked if there were any of my mothers relatives present. I stood. The nurse escorted me to the hallway where a doctor waited to speak with me. He told me my mother had had another heart attack and wanted permission to insert a pace maker. I told him to do whatever he needed to do. Finding the pay phone I called my husband and one of my aunts. A nurse appeared and I was taken to a private room. A large table centered in the room with chairs surrounding it. I took a seat as the nurse said the doctor would be in to speak to me shortly. By then my aunt and husband had come, and we waited until the door opened and presented the doctor who had spoken with me earlier.

His appearance was serious but kind, as he told me there was nothing more they could do and my mother had died. My aunt started crying, yet I sat there stunned. I had just spoken with her the night before and now she was gone. Before the doctor left the room, I thanked him.

Two days later, I sat in the church where I had been married, as the preacher spoke words about my mother. She was a kind and generous woman. She had come to know Christ late in life, but she was now safe in the arms of Jesus.

As a young woman losing a Mom, it was difficult to relate to others. Most people didn't lose their parents when they are in the twenties. Yet, God had deemed his need for her. Even after all these years, I still have an empty place in my heart where she resides.

Don't lose an opportunity to tell your mother how much you love and appreciate her. We don't know if we will have tomorrow.

How to Plot a Payback.

How to Plot a Payback by Melissa Ferguson is a delightful Romcom.

Lavender Rhodes is a long time player on the Neighbors sitcom. She has come a long way from her early roots to make a name for herself.

Successful screenwriter Finn Masters has been given his dream job, writing for Neighbors. One of Hollywood's longest running sitcoms. The problem lies that he will be in close contact with his nemesis. Lavender has been ruining Finn's life since school years in England. And he just doesn't know how he will avoid her.

This is a sweet story of hate turned to love. Lavender doesn't even know how she had ruined Finn's acting career. Or broke up his love life. And got him fired the first day of his new job. His plan is for revenge, but it all goes wrong.

I have loved Melissa Ferguson since reading The Cul-De-Sac War. She writes with humor, and it's all clean stories. Lavender and Finn have distinct voices and the chemistry between them keeps you wanting to read just a little bit more to see how it all unfolds. I loved Mrs. Teaberry and the seniors of the apartment building. The secondary characters are well developed with their own flaws.

Definitely a must read is you enjoy a good clean humorous story.
