You know I've mentioned before how I love to find quilting and craft books at my local Library. Well this week there were some great new finds.
I was so thrilled to find a copy of the 2011 Catalogue of Show Quilts from Paducah.
I loved looking at all the amazing quilts that were entered in this quilt show. Including the Best of Show -
And this one by Caryl Bryer Fallert.
I went to this Quilt show, but after looking at all of the quilts in this book, I realized that I did not see all of them :-( This years show was rearranged due to the flooding in Paducah. But it was nice to be able to view all the quilts that were entered.
Two brand new publications that I brought home to browse through -
And then I found this -
It was the hottest book around the blogging world last year. This was my first look at this book. And you know what? I did not know 90% of the bloggers that were listed!!! I must live quite a sheltered life, as the bloggers that were featured are supposed to be quite popular.
Now I have a question. Do you subscribe to Quilting magazines?? I have subscribed to several different publications through the years. I have my favorites, and some that I just don't bother with. But this month I received two Quilting magazines that, well, they just left me very disappointed. I've already decided that I will not renew my subscriptions. But I just wondered what your thoughts are about the current ones out there. I am not going to name which ones, as I know we all have different tastes, and maybe it's just me :-S I'd just like to hear what others think about the current magazines.
I hope that you are all having a great quilting week!

Jocelyn,
It's evident you have a much better library than the ones we have around here...
To answer your question, no, I am not a subscriber... I am more of the newsstand type. If I find something good on the newsstands, I would buy individual issues. That way I am not stuck with a bunch of magazines I don't like, but feel too wasteful to throw away.
Jocelyn, you need to come visit my guild for the next meeting. At our board meeting the guild librarian said she'd purged over 100 (mostly hardback) books from our quilt library and we're selling them for a buck per book! I cannot WAIT!
I don't do quilt magazines, unless like Ivory Spring said, there's a specific project I want. Then I'll flip through, scan what I want to keep into my laptop, and put the magazine out at the guild meeting for someone else to enjoy. :)
That being said, there were two quilting magazines I used to enjoy thoroughly, which I've been disappointed in recently, too.
There are several quilting magazines that I subscribed to for years..Now, I find the SAME quilts
in some of the current issues. It's disappointing to get a 'new' magazine filled with the exact same patterns that I have from years ago...
I used to subscribe to several different quilting magazines but have let most of my subscriptions lapse over the last year or so. I felt that they were getting very repetitive and I can find more of what I'm looking for online.
I have stopped subscribing, I decided that I want to work on my own designs and finish my UFO's and if a design comes along that I might want to do...then so be it but my room is overflowing as it is.
I'm one of those odd quilters that has never bought a quilting magazine, I have never been inspired by any quilt shown. It seems that most are all about advertising, even the quilts shown push certain fabric lines. I've read that there is a very popular magazine that the Aussies love but for the life of me I can't remember the name.....It might be Australian Patchwork and Quilting. I'll e-mail a friend (who saves every magazine she's ever bought LOL) and ask her, then let you know.
Crispy
Your library has a great selection of quilting books and such. Mine - hmmmm - not so much. LOL
My all time favorite quilting magazine is American Patchwork and Quilting and it's the only one I subscribe to. I look through others at the book store or grocery store but haven't picked one up in ages.
What awesome quilts!!!! I've thought about subscribing to a mag, but I don't I prefer to peruse them at a newstand and just buy one now and then that really appeals to me. My favorites come out of Australia - I just love their style!!!!
No, I don't subscribe to any quilt magazines. Like you, I feel that the content quality just went out the window this past couple of years, so I let my subscriptions run out. I think a lot of magazines have gone that way. The advertising outnumbers the "meat" of the magazines.
Make it a good day! Carline
I subscribe to two or three (or four?) quilting magazines at a time. When one starts to bore me I let the subscription run out and replace it with a different one. When they start piling up I clip out the patterns I like and save them in a big binder with sleeve covers and then recycle the rest of the magazine (or pass it on to another quilter).
Ditto, Jocelyn. That's how I feel, and mostly have stopped the majority of my subscriptions.
I don't subscribe to any quilt magazine anymore - I might look at one at the library, but I would rather spend my money on something else.
Thanks for the reminder about Blogging for Bliss - I just put it on hold. You got some great books, I'll have to look for them at my library too.
I don't get quilt magazines anymore, unless one looks very, very special to me. I haven't subscribed for years. If I could, I'd subscribe to Homespun from Australia, but I'll have to hit the lottery first, lol...
I don't have access easily to shops that sell quilt mags, so yes, I do have subscriptions. I have found though that I have cancelled several in the past couple of years, and not found anything to replace them. Shame really, cos I love getting them and reading through them.
I have stacks and stacks of old quilt magazines that I've kept for inspiration. However, new/current magazines leave me cold. I just purchased one recently (which shall remain nameless) for quite a tidy sum of $$$ - looked forward to sitting down with it for several days. Finally took it to bed with me one night - I was so-o-o disappointed. I'm done with quilt magazines from now on unless someone raves about a particular design. I love all the quilting blogs and have EQ7 so I can pretty much duplicate any pattern I see - plus make changes to the design so it's my own creation. For what those magazines cost, I can buy extra fat quarters!
What a great publication...I love seeing all the winning quilts.
I only subscribe to Quilting Arts....the only one that continually stimulates me. Worse yet....I think my subscription may have expired...I better re-up!

Kelly
I learned a few years ago that magazines just want your money in most cases and do not care about the content.
I have been inspired more with people on the internet. Everything from Politics to Crafting. Recently, I got into quilting .... cause being in Alaska in the winter can suck when you don't have the prefect blanket! And I was tired of not being able to find what I wanted for a quilt or paying out hundreds of dollars. Sew here I am looking on the internet for great ideas, how too's and little hints, details and tricks.
I don't need a magazine, I have fine people like yourself who have a lot of talent and much more inspiration than a magazine! Thanks for posting your blog!
yes, I am like most of the others here. In the beginning.....I loved them for inspiration, but now I like making my own and too - I can buy more fabric if not the subscriptions. Also, there is so much advertisers, and not enough quilts and patterns. And if you can get online, you can get and see anything you need or want now. gloria g. in South Carolina
I used to buy a large number of magazines, but have been disappointed lately with the same old stuff in new wonderful fabrics.
I am not going to renew my subscriptions this year. I get so much more from the blogs that I follow and websites that I dont really feel like I get more value from the magazines that are out right now.
I don't subscribe to any as the content can be variable. When you live in the UK buying mags is very patchy but I'm lucky that a small village newsagent stocks many of the overseas mags as well as the UK ones. The 2 main UK don't often inspire although I've bought both this month, I love some of the US ones but I can see that I will get less interested in them as my skills increase, also all you quilty ladies are such an inspiration and I've learnt so much form you.
What finds at your library. The only magazine I subscribe to now is the Primitive Quilts magazine. The others I just buy as I like "lots" of patterns.
I think blog land has replaced my need for a magazine fix. I was very addicted to the newstand, and only one subscription. I let the subscription lapse. Blogs are so much more personal. Stories, and patterns. Tutorials too. The only thing not there-the ads. Can't say they are missed!
